Can’t make it to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Annual Session in Los Angeles this week? For the second year, the AAO will offer live streaming of several of its doctors track lectures for CE credit. This year, the live stream will be expanded to two full days.

To learn more about this option for staying up-to-date on the latest clinical advances, Orthodontic Products talked to Barb Simon, the AAO’s manager for education.

Orthodontic Products: What prompted the AAO to offer live streaming for CE credit for the first time last year?

Barb Simon: Today, technology provides the AAO with unprecedented opportunities to engage our members worldwide through the distribution of our educational content online. Live streaming leverages the value of one-time events giving the association the power to reach a larger audience of those unable to attend the live conference.

OP: What prompted the expansion to 2 days for the 2019 Annual Session?

Simon: With the support of our Board of Trustees, the AAO implemented a three-year plan offering a 1-day doctor’s streaming event in 2018 and expanding it to two full days in 2019. In 2020, there are plans to offer a 1-day staff track in addition to a 2-day doctors track.

OP: What topics will the live stream include?

Simon: The 2019 event will feature trending topics from a variety of well-known speakers about sleep apnea, pre-adolescent treatment and evidence/advances as well as the inaugural William R. Proffit Memorial Lecture presented by Dr Kevin O’Brien, professor of orthodontics at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

OP: Why should an orthodontist take advantage of this opportunity?

Simon: Those unable to make it to Los Angeles can still be part of the learning. Participants can earn up to 12 continuing education credits. If too busy to commit to both days, they can opt to take a 1-day package instead of two. Each session will provide .5 to 1.0 hours of live CE. This live stream event will not be recorded for future viewing.

OP: Where should orthodontists go to find out more or to register? And when should they register by?

Simon: The live stream event  will be broadcasting from the Doctors Scientific Program at AAO 2019 on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5, 2019. Registration will remain open throughout the event.
