The American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) announced the individuals who will be honored as part of its Excellence in Orthodontics Luncheon and Awards Ceremony held in conjunction with the 2019 American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Annual Session in Los Angeles on May 5.

Michael L. Riolo, DDS, MS, of Seattle, (pictured) will receive the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award—the ABO’s highest honor. The Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award commemorates the achievements of Dr. Albert H. Ketcham. Created by The ABO in 1936, this award is presented annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science and art of orthodontics. Riolo, a former ABO president and member of the board of directors, has been a leader in research and education at Georgetown University, the University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Michigan. He maintained a private practice in Michigan for several decades before relocating to Seattle in 2015.

Barry S. Briss, DMD, of Brookline, Mass, will receive the Earl E. and Wilma S. Shepard Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes an individual for outstanding dedication and advancement of the ideals and mission of the ABO. Briss, a graduate of Tufts Dental School, served 2 years in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He then established a private practice northwest of Boston. He was a professor at Tufts and served as chairman and program director until February 2014 when he retired after 32 years with the program. He now teaches part-time at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

H. Garland Hershey, Jr, DDS, MS, of Chapel Hill, NC, will receive the O.B. Vaughn Special Recognition Award. The award recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed to orthodontic education and furthered the ideals of the ABO. Hershey, a graduate of the University of Iowa, has had a long and distinguished career as a professor of orthodontics and an administrator for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He currently serves on the editorial review board of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the editorial boards of the American Dental Association (ADA) Continuing Education Online and The Angle Orthodontist.

Eustáquio A. Araújo, DDS, MS, of St Louis, will receive the Dale B. Wade Award of Excellence in Orthodontics. The Dale B. Wade Award recognizes an exemplary senior clinician and board certified orthodontist who demonstrates exceptional dedication to orthodontics through clinical excellence and/or devoted teaching in the image of Dr Dale B. Wade, an ABO past president. Araújo has been a leader in orthodontic education on two continents. He is a former program director for graduate orthodontics at Saint Louis University and clinic director of the university’s Center for Advanced Dental Education. Currently, he continues his teaching at SLU and is the head of the dental program of FCMMG – Faculdade de Ciências Médicas de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
